McLaren Has Too Many "Special" Cars

McLaren seems to have endless "special" models. Today I'm providing my take on McLaren's special models, and I'm going to explain why I think McLaren has too many special cars -- and I'll explain why this is a problem.

  • I'm a bit late to the party, but I've got a couple cents I may as well contribute. I think McLaren has a bigger issue on its hands. It's more or less common knowledge that McLaren was in some financial trouble a few years ago. From the perspective of an automotive and business fan, McLaren is a little tough to admire. Adding to your points, there's just too much to follow. I like Lamborghini and Porsche because they are straightforward. I think McLaren loses prospective buyers on the notion that there's just too much to track. I also appreciate the vehicles, but I would never want to own one. Rarity and "specialness" aside, so many McLarens seem to have a "but." It's a great car BUT there's a good chance the wiring will give you problems. It's a good car BUT the transmission acts up. It's a fun car BUT it might catch on fire. Some are quick to argue that that's just to be expected with these niche, low-production, often hand-built supercars. This is absolutely true to a certain extent, but brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini are miles ahead of where they were at the turn of the century. It seems like where some brands focused on internal quality, McLaren has focused on remaining on the cutting edge vs. creating a balance between competitive raw performance capabilities and establishing a track record of reliability. It's like McLaren read all the "I can make a Honda Civic just as fast with half the money" comments from over the years and made that approach their business model. In layman's terms, I think the bigger issue is McLaren is still in trouble. I don't think they've got a fever and the only cure is more models. I think making these arguably minimal changes to existing platforms could be a last ditch effort by McLaren to stay alive by pinching the pennies needed to create special, while charging more. Considering the Uber-special cars like the Senna and Sabre, I think McLaren hopes their customers don't drive the cars that often. Regardless of the individual circumstances, every Senna that caught on fire is a bad look for the company. McLaren assuredly understands they don't rank the highest in reliability, but I think they're taking a unique approach to solving the problem. In this day and age with a SLhttpr and media outlet lurking around every corner, there is no hiding and hoping issues go away. I think McLaren should (or should have) accept their flaws, disclose their way forward with the public, and focus on proving to the automotive world they can master a handful of models and stand shoulder to shoulder with giants, not as the production underdog with the old racing pedigree, but as a company looking towards the future with products that can take the heat.

Louisjc Di MilanoLouisjc Di MilanoPred mesecem
  • Wrong most of those cars are not produced anymore. Now its Arturo basmodell 720S Topmodell in regular linup 765LT 720s special Edition before the bew generation top modell comes out like a Lambo SV or SVJ And then there are the special Modells Senna (also the GTR Version that is track only) Speedtail Elva Sabre Not so different from other supercar companies Aston has the Valkyrie Valhalla Speedster DB5 remake All the bond and F1 special editions.... And Also Vanquish DBS DBX As normal cars Ferrari also has a lot of cars including the sf90 the Monzas and so on...

    F KF KPred mesecem
    • Most of recent AM special do feel special. Valkyire for example is design by the same guy who made a lot of championship winning cars from Indy to F1 the latter of which is his spotlight. (ironically also Mclaren too.) So that edition is very special especially when it's said design from that guy to be the closest to F1 which that wording would be actually not as far fetch as the others claim that. When it comes from one of the best F1 designers so his claims do hold weight. Ferrari SF90 isn't even a special edition. Yes it has a lettering of one. Thing is though from whatever info is on it. The car isn't some limited edition piece and is more "unlimited production" as in Ferrari will sell as much as the market is willing to buy it. That's not even close to a special edition production in definition a Special edition when Ferrari is talking making as much as it is ordered. Especially when u talking Ferrari special editions. Monza is special edition yes, but it's tribute to their history and shows where Ferrari is going. And it's very much rare to see a Ferrari speedster.
